Thank You James Gamble!

16 September 2019

Thank You James Gamble!

Thank you so much to James Gamble who cycled the length of the country earlier this September – a total of 980 miles from Land’s End to John O'Groats!

James was riding in aid of his daughter Lily who was diagnosed with NF1 at the age of 3. It was an incredible achievement from James on top of which he also managed to raise an amazing total for Nerve Tumours UK.

Everyone at Nerve Tumours UK would like to extend their gratitude to James for going far beyond the extra mile for our shared vital cause.

If you would like to support James, then please visit his just giving page below 😊

James started his journey on Friday the 6th of September which took him from Lands End to Oakhampton, a journey with a total of 105 miles. In total he cycled for 9 days, each day he cycled no less than 100 miles with his longest cycle being 119 miles on day 8 between Strathdon and Kyle of Sutherland and his shortest totalling 100.5 miles between Bath and Ludlow on day 3. That means his shortest journey was actually longer than the Prudential RideLondon, one of the UKs most revered cycling marathons!

In total James managed to cycle 980.7 miles with a climb of roughly 7000 ft. If you would like to view his complete route you can do so by clicking on the download below

An example of one of James' routes

This was actually James' shortest route totaling 100.5 miles!

James' reasoning for undertaking such a formidable challenge was largely centred around his daughter Lily and the work that Nerve Tumours UK carries out on a daily basis.

James had this to say "Nerve Tumours UK helped us and specifically their support specialist in Plymouth Carolyn Reedman looked after our daughter Lily who was diagnosed with NF1 at the age of 3 (she is now 9). Like any parent, you want to take any pain away from your children, but because we couldn’t do that directly, my wife Melanie and I have focused on fundraising for Nerve Tumours UK. The charity has been a tremendous support for Lily and our family, and the funds we raise allow their work for the NF community to continue and grow.

I have run the London Marathon and cycled RideLondon three times, while my life Melanie has abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, and competed in the 100km Race to the Stones. Having done all that, I felt I needed to up the game, and this 980-mile ride certainly does that! We have received tremendous support. I am a Store Manager for Marks and Spencer, and the 30 stores in our region have really got behind supporting me on the ride.

Nerve Tumours UK is a great cause, and we’ve made some amazing friends among other families and members of the nerve tumours community. The chance to help Lily and other sufferers keeps you focused and motivated. The value of this network is demonstrated every day in the unique work of the specialists with individuals, families, health professionals, schools, other voluntary organisations and a range of other professionals."

– James

Once again James thank you 😊
