Throughout May I will be taking part in the ‘Shine a light Marathon’ to raise awareness of Neurofibromatosis (NF) and also raise money for Nerve Tumours UK. Some of you may not know but myself, my brother and my dad all have this condition (NF-1).

Despite approximately 26,500 people in the UK currently diagnosed with NF-1, there is still little awareness and funding for the condition. Nerve Tumours UK provides crucial medical and non-medical support to help those living with Neurofibromatosis.

As with a lot of people, we weren’t aware of Neurofibromatosis until we were diagnosed in 2004. We all led very normal lives up until this year. Nerve Tumours UK provides support and information, as well as campaigns and raises awareness of NF on behalf of over 26,500 people in the UK who have Neurofibromatosis. It is a life-long disease and yet not a lot is known about the disease.

Therefore, I have chosen to run the Shine A Light Marathon over the Month of May – World Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month 2023! Instead of 26.2 miles, I will run/walk 26.5 miles for the 26,500 affected by Neurofibromatosis in the UK – going the extra 0.3 miles for the NF community. My aim of this fundraiser is to help raise awareness of NF and also raise as much money as I can for Nerve Tumours UK!

INFER (International NF Educational Resources) is a series of online educational lectures for medical professionals by leading neurofibromatosis experts. The Masterclasses take place online approximately once a month, each on a different topic, and include real-time interaction between the expert presenter and the participants. The presentations are conducted in English, with real-time audio interpretation available in 6 additional languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. A recording of each INFER masterclass is then be made available online in each language for those who could not attend an event.
