Post training run wearing my NF vest with pride!

Run
In 2016 I found a small painful lump in my ankle which was operated on and removed. I didn’t think about it much once I had recovered. A year on from this, a large tumour on my sciatic nerve was discovered and then tumours on my auditory nerves and my spine. I was in pain and frightened having been diagnosed with a rare and incurable genetic condition I had never heard of; Neurofibromatosis. Nerve Tumours UK was so helpful and informative, keeping me positive when the drugs didn’t work. I hope I can raise something to say thank you and that my story will help others through the scary rollercoaster that NF2 can be.
After my last operation two years ago, when a pint glass-sized tumour was removed from my sciatic nerve, I promised myself I would learn to walk properly again. Being middle-aged and unfit (and a wee bit grumpy!), recovery was slow but I had some amazing support from family and friends, Hannah at Better Body and the physio team at Sevenoaks Hospital. When they got me off my crutches and into the pool for the first time and asked me my goal, I told them I wanted to run, which was a surprise to them as well as me, given I couldn’t walk unaided at the time! When we all realised I wasn’t joking the possibility that I would only ever walk with a limp and a stick was never discussed again. Not quite two years on I am fit and active with no noticeable limp and I am running regularly – ish!
I have entered two 10kms races this summer both which are very soon: The Town & Gown in Oxford on 27th June and the Vitality London 10,000 on 11th July and I would really appreciate your support. My goal is to raise £2,650. I know that this is a big ask, but by sponsoring me, you will help support the more than 26,500 people in the UK who have Neurofibromatosis like me and help raise much-needed awareness of the conditions.
I know from first-hand experience that nerve tumours can be uncompromising, painful and punishing even with a support network. Nerve Tumours UK provides crucial medical and non-medical support, in the form of information, regional patient days, online communities, a network of healthcare professionals, and a national nerve tumours helpline. They are helping me and others who are living with nerve tumours to live the best life we can.
So please help me to say thank you, by sponsoring me to run for this great cause. Every donation no matter how small, will help. THANK YOU!
