Martha was diagnosed with NF1 at 5 1/2 years old. Up until this point we had never heard of Neurofibromatosis (NF) and it took us a long time to be able to say it! Since that diagnosis we have learnt much about this genetic condition but we’re always surprised at how little people know about the condition, including medical professionals. This condition is extremely variable with some people going their whole lives not knowing they have it and others having their lives hugely affected in a life-limiting way with multiple operations and co-factors affecting their everyday lives. Two thirds of people with NF also have a learning disability.
26,000 people in the UK have NF making it one of the most common genetic conditions in the country. Half of those have inherited the gene from a parent and the other half have developed the condition as a spontaneous mutation in the womb.
Martha is holding a fundraiser at her Primary School on 20th May selling cakes, biscuits and homemade bracelets and badges to raise awareness in her local community.
Thank you for visiting this page and donating towards Martha’s fundraiser. All money goes towards the support of people and families affected by NF.
