Melanie is fundraising in memory of Ben Harman
17 August 2025

In August this year, I’ll be taking on one of the biggest challenges of my life — an Ironman triathlon — in memory of my cousin Ben, who passed away in 2022 at just 41 years old, after a long and difficult illness.
Ben had neurofibromatosis, a condition that brought countless rounds of gruelling treatment, hospital stays, and pain. But if you’d met Ben, you’d never know it. He had a smile that never left his face, a kind word for everyone, and a way of seeing the good in every person and every situation — no matter how hard things got. He truly was one of the most selfless, warm-hearted people I’ve ever known. He would have done anything for anyone.
To honour Ben’s strength, optimism, and the kindness he showed everyone around him, I’m raising money for Nerve Tumours UK, a charity that supports people living with neurofibromatosis — helping them find the treatment, guidance, and hope they need.
On 17th August, I’ll be taking part in Ironman Copenhagen — a race that includes:
• 2.4 miles (3.8 km) of swimming
• 112 miles (180 km) of cycling
• 26.2 miles (42.2 km) of running — a full marathon
This is my first Ironman, and I won’t lie — it’s a scary prospect. I’ve got 10 more weeks of tough training ahead, and it’s already been one of the hardest things I’ve ever taken on. But whenever it feels overwhelming, I remind myself why I’m doing this — for Ben, and for others like him who need more support, more research, and more hope.
If you’re able to donate, no matter the amount, I’d be incredibly grateful. And if you can give generously — thank you. You’ll be making a real difference in the lives of people facing neurofibromatosis with the same quiet strength and courage Ben showed every single day.
This one’s for you, Ben.
