Tommy’s 40,000 steps a day
01 March 2026
I have NF1 and was diagnosed at 3 months old. Two of my three children also have the condition.
I have an optic nerve glioma and also reduced field of vision.
I have to look at the floor whilst walking and these darker nights are making this challenge a struggle.
I was told I have possible joint mobility and development dyspraxia that’s possibly linked with NF1. I also have an issue with nerves and circulation in my fingers but am yet to find where this is coming from, so the cold weather makes my fingers hurt too.
Nerve Tumours UK Nurses have been on hand for me and my children.
They have spoken with the children's school and advised them on ways they could support my boys.
The challenges l face and the way I deal with them is that I just put my head down and get on with it. I have coached children’s football and also have given personal training sessions at the gym.
I work for Tesco Mobile and work with a small team who are fantastic and really help and support me. There are often times I help on the checkouts and also on the online picking side within the store. Again the Tesco colleagues have been amazing and I don’t think I could work for a more accommodating employer.
This October, I’m taking on a challenge that means a huge amount to me
walking 40,000 steps EVERY DAY for the entire month
to raise money for Nerve Tumours UK.
One of the things that makes Nerve Tumours UK so important is the Specialist NF Support they provide.
Having knowledgeable NF Nurses available to speak to people living with the condition and their families can make such a difference, especially when you’re struggling, worried or simply need someone who understands.
That’s why I want to give something back. It’s going to be a massive challenge, especially with the difficulties I already face, but that’s what makes it mean even more to me.
