Meena’s Awareness Raising Coastal Walk
01 November 2024
Meeting Point: Penarth Pavillion
End Point: Senedd
Distance: 2.6 Miles
The Royal College of Pathologists’ Wales Regional Council organised a walk along the Wales Coastal Path to celebrate the vital role of pathologists in healthcare. NTUK trustee Prof Meena Upadhyaya OBE brought together part of the local community in Port Talbot for a 2.6 mile long coastal walk to raise awareness of NF and the contribution of pathologists in healthcare. Sheila and Clive Owen and their friends, longstanding supporters and campaigners to NTUK joined the group. This wonderful event was organised in collaboration with the EMWWH 'Ethnic Minority Women in Welsh Health Care' and The Royal College of Pathologists.
"Living within a geographical community along the stunning Wales Coastal Path our aim was to come together to promote health, enjoy the beauty of nature and raise awareness of rare diseases. This event was open to all — health professionals, patient advocates or simply to those who wanted to make a difference"

– Prof. Upadhyaya"The coastal walk from Penarth to the Senedd in Cardiff was truly spectacular. It was organised by the Wales Regional Council of the Royal College of Pathologists on Saturday, 26 October 2024, to raise awareness for rare diseases. With clear blue skies and warm sunshine, the weather could not have been more perfect for this event. Led by Dr. Anu Gunavardhan, Chair of the Council, this event invited all College members to participate. The walk began at Penarth Pier and concluded at the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament building, in Cardiff Bay. We were honoured to have the Mayor of Penarth, Cllr Gwenda Roberts, Jenny Rathbone MS, Dr Jonathan Kell, Dr Graham Shortland and Professor Meena Upadhyaya to join us for this important occasion. We also thank Nerve Tumours UK for sharing their beautiful and inspiring colourful balloons. Completing the walk at the Senedd marked a significant moment for all involved. It was inspiring to see members come together for the College Coastal Walk, showcasing the vital work of pathologists and raising awareness about rare diseases. We are especially grateful for the support from Cllr Gwenda Roberts, Jenny Rathbone MS, the medics for rare diseases, the SWAN clinic, Ethnic Minority Women in Welsh Health Care, and Nerve Tumour UK. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to promote the essential contributions of pathologists in Wales."
