Connected Recovery - Tackling Loneliness
13 December 2023
Nerve Tumours UK, and the NF Community, were represented at the All Party Parliamentary Group meeting, held at Portcullis House on 11 December 2023.
The main topic of the meeting, Tackling Loneliness and Connected Communities, addressed the importance of social connections and communities.
We were invited as members of the Jo Cox Foundation, and during the meeting they made a callout to sign the petition on tackling loneliness, which was initiated by the Red Cross.
About the APPG:
The British Red Cross, alongside the Campaign to End Loneliness, provides the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Tackling Loneliness and Connected Communities. Building on the work of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, the group seeks to influence legislation and policy making to reduce the causes and effects of loneliness across the UK. Read the APPG’s latest report A Connected Recovery to find out more about our work and goals for loneliness in the UK.
Key Findings:
The inquiry explored problems and identified solutions within four crucial policy areas, including:
- translating national policy into local action through local authorities
- community infrastructure (including housing, transport and public spaces)
- how to adequately fund the voluntary and community sector upon which social prescribing depends
- designing and implementing ways to test the implications of government policies on loneliness.
Recently, the Government committed to work with the group on the 4th Annual Loneliness Report, and to forward the recommendations contained in the recent report on Workplace Loneliness. The report explores the extent of loneliness at work in the UK and how different groups are impacted.
In supporting the NF community, where loneliness will affect some of the 26,500 people that are diagnosed with the condition, alongside their families and carers, we therefore strongly support the project.
At the meeting, we chatted to various charities such as Carers UK and Age UK, that are actively organising community and support networks for those who are affected by a rare disease.
If you are affected by any of the issues above, please take a look at the NTUK Help Section under Helpful Charities where you can find further information. Alternatively, please call the NTUK Helpline on 07939 046 030 on Monday, Wednesday or Friday 9am to 5pm.
